UNIVERSITY OF ZADAR

Founded in 1396 as the first university in Croatia, the University of Zadar (UNIZD) blends a unique historical legacy with a forward-looking vision of knowledge, innovation, and international collaboration. Re-established in 2002, UNIZD has since grown into a dynamic public university with 27 departments, 10 research centres, and specialised laboratories that foster creativity, interdisciplinarity, and technology transfer.

With more than 4,500 students across undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programmes, UNIZD offers a broad spectrum of study fields: from humanities and social sciences to natural sciences, biomedicine, technical and biotechnical sciences. Flagship programmes include Psychology, Information Technology, Maritime Studies, Nursing, and Management, all designed to connect education, research, and real-world challenges. Strengthening its technical profile, UNIZD is launching a new undergraduate programme in Mechatronics and Robotics, designed to train future engineers in advanced interdisciplinary technologies.

The university’s research ecosystem is actively engaged in national and EU-funded projects, including Horizon Europe, Erasmus+, Interreg, and initiatives supported by the Croatian Science Foundation. The Center for Projects, Science, and Technology Transfer supports researchers in project development, innovation, and collaboration with industry. Advanced facilities, including the Marine Research and Aquaculture Lab, Ship Navigation Simulator, UAVs for geospatial exploration, and a UX Lab, provide students, researchers, and entrepreneurs with the resources to develop impactful innovations.

Internationalisation lies at the core of UNIZD’s mission. With partnerships in more than 250 institutions worldwide and membership in the EU-CONEXUS alliance, the university fosters mobility, joint academic programmes, and collaborative research – particularly in the sustainable development of coastal regions.
